Gut Health and our Immune System

15, Feb 2022 in Colonic Hydrotherapy

Our gut is the home to over 38 trillion microbes collectively know as our Gut Microbiota. Here are some easy ways you can help yourself.

Our Gut Microbiota is extremely powerful and is linked in one way or another to pretty much every other organ and system in our body such as our metabolism, our cardiovascular and our immune system.

To keep our bodies functioning at our best, it is essential to maintain the health of our Gut Microbiota. By keeping our microbiota healthy they will help to train our immune system, communicate with our brain and lungs (important for Covid-19) as well as other vital organs and are linked to better heart health and lowering the risk of Type 2 diabetes both of which are risk factors for Covid-19.

Although still being collated, there is growing evidence that our gut health can influence health outcomes in those suffering from Covid-19. It is not to say that by having a healthy gut we will be immune from the disease, but it appears that it may help lower the risk of becoming severely sick from it.

With the current situation in Victoria where most of us are stuck at home, there are some easy ways that we can help ourselves that are not complicated, restrictive, or expensive.

  • Fibre. Eat more fibrous foods. Fill up on a variety of foods - predominantly plant based, to fuel our gut microbiota. Try looking for the fresh fruits and veggies that are in season and incorporate wholegrains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Your gut will thank you for it.
  • Exercise. Just move in some way shape or form. We are allowed an hour of exercise outside of the house per day however that should not stop you from being able to do some form of exercise within the house too. Does not have to be over strenuous just get your body moving.
  • Sleep. Just because we are stuck at home does not mean every night should be a Netflix marathon night. Try and maintain some form of normality and aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Sleep is extremely important in resting our bodies and allows healing to take place.
  • Mindfulness. Don’t knock it until you have tried it. The benefits of just 5 minutes of meditation or some form of mindfulness daily are amazing for relaxing the gut-brain axis. Super important for the stress and potential mental health issues we might be facing in these challenging times.
  • Hydration. So simple, yet so often overlooked. Make sure we are drinking our 2-3 liters of water a day. I promise you your gut and your butt will thank you for it.
