What are the Benefits of Floatation Therapy?

08, Feb 2021 in Education & Resources

Floatation therapy is often mistaken as just a way to help people relax. Although floatation therapy is certainly used as a relaxation technique, there are many additional benefits to floatation therapy.

Let’s take a closer look at how floatation therapy can help you achieve the many amazing benefits!

Reduced stress, anxiety and depression – Most of us lead chaotic and stressful lives. Our cortisol levels are constantly heightened. This is our bodies natural flight or fight response.  Floatation therapy helps lower our cortisol levels which causes stress and anxiety, and in turn this helps to lower our heart rate and blood pressure. Magnesium also plays a very vital role in anxiety and depression. Over time magnesium can easily deplete during times of stress. During floating, magnesium from the Epsom Salts are absorbed through the skin which can then be immediately used by our cells.

Improved Relaxation – By lowing our cortisol levels floating switches off our fight or flight mode and activates our rest and digest system (known as the parasympathetic nervous system) which is responsible for our bodies natural healing and relaxation. By reducing our stress and decreasing muscle tension this allows us to leave the floatation tank in a more relaxed state of mind.

Enhanced Circulation – When you think of a time that you are at rest, either sleeping, lying on the couch or sitting down. A time when you try and shut off. A component of your body always still has some form of pressure against it, whether it’s the mattress or the chair. When floating your entire body is relieved of this contact pressure. This allows our blood vessels to fully dilate which maximises blood flow and circulation of oxygen and nutrients.

Improved Sleep – Let’s look at sleep! Who would like a better night’s sleep, or at least more sleep! Many of us have trouble shutting off our brain and falling asleep. Floating allows us to drift off to sleep much faster. This works by reducing brain stimulation and brain activity. It is also known that spending 1 hour in a float tank has the same effects as 4 hours sleep.

Management of pain – Do you suffer from pain and discomfort? Floating helps our body to release endorphins. Endorphins are a hormone that help to act as a natural painkiller.

Alleviate Headaches and Migraines – Headaches are often triggered by stress and muscle tension. As floating helps to reduce stress and muscle tension this in turn helps to alleviate headaches. It is thought that migraines are caused by restricted blood flow. This can occur when blood vessels become constricted. Floating helps reduce inflamed blood vessels and assists with the dilation of the blood vessels which can help alleviate a migraine or even prevent a migraine from starting.

Inflammation Reduction – Just like with migraines floating can help reduce inflammation throughout the body. The magnesium from the Epsom salts acts as a natural anti-inflammatory providing respite to tired and inflamed muscles.

Muscle recovery after exercise or injury – The magnesium in the Epsom salts is a great protein builder for joints as well as a relaxant for tired and aching muscles. With no pressure against your muscles when floating, this allows every muscle in your body to completely relax and rejuvenate. As floating enhancing circulation this speeds up your recovery time after an intense workout or injury.
